To say I spend a lot of time thinking about ways we can improve the workplace is an understatement. There's no topic I'm more passionate about.
For this reason, I often get asked, "What's the one thing we should do to improve our company culture?"
That, my friends, is a hard question to answer.
It's like asking, "What's the one thing I should do to improve my marriage?"
There's a lot of different things you can do and what you should pick to focus on depends on a variety of factors ranging from team size, to leadership style, to company goals.
What matters is that you pick one thing and stick to it. Choose one positive action and see it through. Truly commit to the behavior change. Because that's where the magic is.
At it's core, company culture consists of the unspoken behaviors that take place everyday.
It's whether you genuinely smile and say hello when you see your colleagues in the morning or avoid eye contact and put your headphones in headphones immediately.
It's whether you get away from your desk during lunch or keep working while you eat.
It's whether you recognize and reward those who compete or those who collaborate.
It's these choices, driven by your core values and beliefs, that define your culture.
So the next time you're thinking about company culture, don't plan a party. Instead, pick one new behavior and really commit to it.
Not for a day.
Or a week.
But for a whole quarter.
Not only will the new behavior be a habit by the end of 90 days, but I promise the effort will go so much further than any happy hour ever could.
